“Light from on high”
– Luk 1:78 (AMP)
Prayer
Prayer. The most neglected privilege. The answer to every desperate situation. One of the most powerful weapons in a believer’s arsenal. The power that will let God’s Kingdom be manifested on earth.
Because religion and tradition have taught as somewhat incorrectly about prayer, many feel inadequate to pray properly. It seems to be the gift of a privileged few. Yet, the Bible teaches us to “pray without ceasing”, meaning, we are all to pray all the time.
Jesus taught us not to pray like the religious leaders of His day. He said that it should not be like a mantra – repetition of words. He also stated that it was not the length of a prayer that mattered.
Prayer is a very intimate thing. It is about talking to your Father. It is love utterance to your Saviour. It is fellowship with the great King of the universe. It is not about style, not about specific words or phrases – it is a heart thing. Hannah’s lips moved without making any sound, and God answered her with the birth of Samuel. Brother Lawrence said in his writings that “prayer is practising the Presence of God”.
And if we don’t know how to pray, the Holy Spirit promised to intercede for us with unutterable groanings. We have a call to pray, now more that ever. It is not just for the purpose of getting things done or making things happen, it is also simply to commune with God. We are part of a Divine family, and a family cannot exist without communication.
Along these lines, I would like to invite you to attend our Thursday night Prayer Meetings, which are restarting next week (18 January, 19h00). I would also like you to join us on Sunday mornings for half an hour of prayer before the service starts (08h30). It has been in those half hour slots that I have so often heard God speaking to me in directing the opening of our services. May we all get addicted to prayer!
