Spiritual Habitat
Some time ago, I used the small aquarium on my desk in a spiritual analogy. Well, today I would like to borrow from that again. The wellbeing of fish in an aquarium (or fishbowl) is directly linked to the quality of the water, i.e. their environment. It needs no explaining when saying that we are greatly influenced by our daily environment. That is why God reintroduced us to His spiritual environment when we were born again.
As believers, we have a choice of habitat. We can either spend all of our time in the contaminating environment of man’s fallen state, namely sin, anger, failure, defeat, and so on, or we can draw constant life from the Heavenly realm! If you remove fish from their water habitat, they will survive only for a short while. Similarly, if a Christian does not spend time with God, spiritual death will settle in. In Joh 15:5 Jesus says “I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in Me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from Me you can do nothing.”
The second century persecuted Christians used the “fish” (Greek ?????, or “ichthys”, which is the Greek acronym for “Jesus Christ, Son of God, Saviour”) as a symbol to mark meeting places. Next time you see a fish, be that in a bowl, dam or on a bumper sticker, be reminded that God is calling you to meet with Him in your spiritual habitat!
